Help me!
Apr 8, 01:13 PM
Hi Everyone,
I have decided that I haven’t been blogging enough. I am going to make a little more effort to do so from now on, perhaps just to waffle on about stuff that I am doing or have opinions about, and also because I think a little more effort on the site would be worthwhile.
I have been quiet for the last 3 or 4 months for a number of reasons. Settling in to the new home and studio is one of them. I have had a hard time getting comfortable with the new studio, partly because we had numerous issues with the sound, which was lame and boring and took a lot of the joy away from making music. These issues are pretty much fixed. Here are some pics of the studio in its current form:-

As you can see, there is now a wall of sound organizing foam helping out. What you cant see is that the wall opposite is also covered in peculiar shaped tiles. The room looks kinda weird to me, lol, but at least its working as far as controlling the sound goes. It’s still a little strange, and I have to be careful not to over compensate for bass loss when I EQ, but at least I can get back into making music. Well, I would be able to, if it wasn’t for the second problem, which is a lack of inspiration. Or rather, a lack of constant inspiration. Some days I am raring to go and I have ideas bursting out of m in all directions, other days I just sit looking at the screen and sighing lol. Thats just how it goes I guess. Today, I am inspired, so I am interrupting some music making while I write this, but those are the reasons for my less than normal output.
There are a few other reasons too. The more observant of you will notice I have a guitar hanging from the wall. I actually have 2, and acoustic and electric. Bexxie bought me the electric after I took it in my head that I might like to learn to play an instrument. After all, I have been making music for 18 years, and while I can draw a wicked piano on Cubase, I cant actually play much more than chopsticks if I sit in front of a keyboard. Its never really bothered me, but I do like a lot of hard rock, and also a lot of folk and mellow type “man and guitar songs about how miserable life is” stuff lol.
So I have got into that, and am learning pretty quickly that the guitar is great fun to play, painful on the fingers, and nowhere near as easy as it looks. It is also time consuming, but thats cool and I am really enjoying it, so its a good thing.
Another thing I have been doing is writing a book. I am writing my history, similar to the one on the website, but much more in depth, and starting from how I got into the music industry and Smart Es, and my experiences with that. Everything from the process of making the record and contract issues and tours and all that chaotic blah. Its turning out pretty well I think. I have the first 5 chapters done, and they are healthy chapters like you would have in a real book, not a page of blurb I threw together in an afternoon. Its really enjoyable to do, and I think people will like it when I have finally finished, but it is another thing that is taking some time. I have a great title for it, but am not going to share that or any of the book until I am at least half way through, otherwise I know I wont complete it. I almost didnt say anything on here because sometimes once you tell someone about your plans, they dont seem worth doing lol…but I wanted to explain my lack of attention on the website, and that is one of the major reasons I am quieter than usual. I have tried to do things like this before, but always floundered and stopped. This time it looks like I am really going to be able to write the whole thing, and as well as what happened to me, it also encompasses my personal view of how the rave scene developed from 1990 onwards. I will update everyone on it as I go along, but I may well search for a publisher once it is complete, and see what happens.
I have been away for a few days in Florida visiting relatives, which is why I haven’t added any more MP3s to the site. I will get back on that in the next few days. I haven’t just stopped :o)
Lastly, the title of this blog is asking for some help. I need some advice on getting a new video camera. I want to be able to record some of the gigs I have coming up. I have a Flip, which is great, but the zoom is lousy. I need a relatively cheap camera, that records to a hard drive or memory card, preferably as an MP4 or .avi, with a good zoom, that will work in low light or with loud noise, and that is Mac friendly (ie not Sony because they make great, but unusable, shit and I am never giving them any money ever again). I really want to record some footage of the upcoming event in Seattle, so I need to get the camera by Friday next week. I would prefer recommendations from people who have actually used the camera in a club so know it works, but really, any help is appreciated! And the zoom function means that the Kodak Ki8 is not an option unfortunately, even though it does sound fantastic! Please let me know in the comments below!
Alrighty then. I am going to get back on to the music stuff! Nice one peeps!

What kind of resolution are you looking for? 720 like the Flip HD? There is always the Sony Bloggie that has a 5x optical zoom. I have only played with this one in the stores, not actually in a club setting. Only played with the Zi8 in that setting. I would assume the low light stuff should be pretty good since its the “bloggie” and probably handles low light well. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/sony-bloggie-mhs-cm5/4505-6500_7-33939622.html?tag=mncolBtm;rnav

Sounds like good stuff!
I have a sony handy cam, works fine with my mac. You have to have a firewire one though, works perfectly with final cut pro to.
Not really used it in a club so dont know how it will work.
All I can advise is do not get a hard drive or dvd cam. They are useless. You really want a DV tape one as when it come to editing the its a lot better. With the dvd / hd ones you are forever having to render and convert the crappy mpeg video from the dvd / hd cams. Not to mention DV is higher in quality as it is less compressed.
But having said that, I have FCP 5 so unless they have make huge changes you may no longer need to render mpegs / avi’s etc now. who knows. But from experience I would say a DV cam with firewire and you are sorted. O and FCP :p
Want any mroe info on FCP just ask
Good luck though

Hey! I just started learning the guitar too! I actually think I have the exact same guitar, but mine’s orange/red fade. Good luck with it. I can’t believe you never played an instrument. Thought for sure those piano bits in your tunes were you. What’s with all the keyboards in the studio then?!
I’ve lost all inspiration from hardcore and drum&bass. Aside from this website, I don’t bother listening to new stuff anymore. I’ve started drawing more inspiration from rock lately, like psychedelic and krautrock. Stuff like Animal Collective, Battles, Acid Mothers Temple, The Flaming Lips, The Butthole Surfers, Soft Machine, Can, etc. I’ve always wanted to make some sort of danceable freeform electronic music. I’ve been rather unsuccessful so far… So yeah, try listening to genres you’ve never explored before. I’ve even found inspiration in country, believe it or not, haha.

“I have decided that I haven’t been blogging enough.” <—- Disagree. Trust me, you are never going to look back on life and think, ‘I wish I had blogged more.’ ;)
