Bangface, New Tunes, Luna-C 15, Podcast 7 and other invisible stuff.

Hi Everyone!
Check out the awesome video from my set at Bangface:-
I had a little time to myself and thought it was time to update the site. Sorry I have been so slack, but my Fathers death, then the travel involved, then the funeral, then preparing for the Bangface gig, then the travel again…its just been too hectic. So I finally got some time to update the site today, and I have been thwarted at every point. Yes, its going to be one of those blog posts where I rant on and on about how annoying things are. Feel free to scroll down below the picture of the Flip, because the text up to there is me complaining. Just warning you :o) If I were you, I wouldn’t bother reading this at all and would go and do something more productive, like picking your nose, instead. Except that I’m not you, so I am going to do some good old fashioned English whining. Where was I? Ah yes. So. I thought it was about time I got a Youtube account, so that I could put up videos. I haven’t put many videos up recently, and this is because about a year ago I bought a very expensive HD Sony Camcorder.
I was looking for one that would take good film, record to hard drive, and be small and compact for travel. As I was paying for it, I had that tingley “there’s a reason you shouldn’t buy Sony products” feeling. You know the one you get when you had a valid reason for avoiding something, but you cant remember what it was? Well I had that, and like the fool that I am, I ignored it. I thought I had covered all bases. Yes, it was small. Yes, it had lots of storage space, a good zoom and long battery life. Yes, recorded in HD to hard drive, and in Mpeg format no less. Easypeasybubbleandsqueezy, right? But NO! No, no, no no. Stupidly, I assumed that the “records in mpeg” meant that it recorded in mpeg. When what it meant was records in super special SONY Mpeg which cant be used on a Mac unless you load up the software on the disks supplied. Which didn’t contain any Mac software. But did, in small print on the bottom of the paper CD sleeve say “not available for Mac”. WANKERS. Fucking Sony tosspots. I KNEW it. I knew there was a reason I didn’t buy Sony, a reason I refused to get a PS3. It was because the last product I bought from them was exactly the same combination of technical genius and absolute spazzyness.
So anyway, I spent ages twatting about online trying to find a converter to do the job, and after a few false starts, I found one. It was simple to use, but now I had to wait ages as I copied the files from the camcorder to the Mac, then put it into the worlds slowest shittiest converter and wait 2 or 3 days for it to convert the files, before putting them into imovie which would tell me they were too long to put into the project. So then I had to buy Quicktime Pro, drop the files into that, cut them into pieces no longer than 10 minutes, save them, wait for eternity while they saved, drop them into imovie, wait another billion years for them to get into the project, and then, finally, I could start making a film clip.
Fuck that.
It would have been quicker and easier to have used the old shitty camcorder which recorded on tape. It played the film in real time, so thats slow. But waaaayyyy quicker than the converting files marathon I was left with. Stupid me, thinking it would be easier. I should know by now. The simple rule is:-
“Never, ever, ever upgrade anything unless you absolutely have to because it almost always makes things much much worse.”
This is true for cameras, phones, music software, computers…pretty much everything. And once I had converted the camera files, I found out that the new camcorder couldn’t handle loud noise, humidity, or being used in any way other than staying very still in a brightly lit room where nothing much happened. It constantly “buffered” (ie froze and missed the thing you were trying to record) and the screen would go black if it got too hot / cold / humid or normal.
So, I sold the $1000.00 dollar camcorder, and got the extremely cheap Flip instead. Heres a picture of the Flip:-

The Flip is fkin marvelous. Yes, it only records for an hour. But its small, high quality, records as avi, has a built in USB connection so you need nothing to connect it to the computer – which handily also charges it up! Its as small as a phone, and works in hot sweaty raves with loud noise. So yeah, very happy with that. Anyway, I popped that into the computer, and of course, the brand new version of imovie I got with my new computer wont play avi files…sigh…so off we go again, hunting for a converter. I found one, I downloaded it, it informed me that I could use it, but it would put a watermark on everything unless I paid for it. Which I did. Once the whole tedious paying for the program nonsense was complete, it told me it would send me “information” in a few business day. Luckily, it arrived today, and after a few initial problems, I got a basic imovie clip together. And while I hate dealing with new programs, I have to say that the option to save and upload the movie to youtube is a fantastic edition to the imovie program. So thats what I have done! Yay!
So, Bangface was AMAZING! I played two sets, one on the Friday night, one on the Saturday afternoon at the now infamous Bangface Pool Party! This meant that I got to be there for the opening ceremony, and heard Dave Skywalkers fkin brilliant set. I actually went to the gig with Dave and Shaz, so that was super cool too. But where was I? Oh yeah, Daves set was awesome. Track it down and download it…in fact, heres a link to copy and paste into your browser:-

I was really impressed…I think he recorded this set before he played it, but on the night it seemed pretty flawless. Which is even more impressive considering the changes in style and tempo.
As for me, I got to test out a few dubs for Supaset 9 on the Friday night, which went down great. I have been working on it for the past few months, in between everything else. So far, its pretty good I think. A lot more to do though…On the Saturday, I played at the very dangerous pool party. Health and Safety would have a fit. You know a bad place to set up turntables? A few feet away from a pool filled with ravers splashing and throwing inflatables lol. But it was a brilliant set for me. In how many sets do you get to play Krome & Time “The Slammer”, Sir Mix-a-lot “Babys Got Back”, Matrix & Futurebound “Coast To Coast”, Nasenbluten “Cuntface” and a rip off of Nickleback? Not many, lol. And take it from me, there’s nothing quite as bonkers as a raver splash party with everyone out of their face and singing “cocksucker” while throwing a giant smiley inflatible at each other. It was an amazing, fantastic, brilliant rave, and I have to thank James and the whole Bang Face crew for once again putting on an event of such mindfuckery that the only way to beat it will be the next one.
Other things…I am hoping that we will soon be adding Lucky Breaks to the free downloadable labels. So thats gonna be good. Of course, Wizbit can be a little slow at getting things done – I would hassle him, but, err, I can also be a little slow at getting things done lol. So as not to be a total hypocrite, I will gently remind him every now and again :o) but hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.
I have started work on Luna-C Project 15. I didn’t intend to start work on it, it just happened while I was trying to get more of Supaset 9 done. So far its very editty (thats a new word. Now I am in the USA, I feel I have to invent new words lol). Its also very breakbeat. And HEAVY. I think its the Bangface influence. But I really want to push myself with my music, and for a while I have been on a kick drum tip. Now, I want to do breakbeats again, so lets hope it comes out well!
Podcast 7 has been delayed because instead of working on that, I have been doing Luna-C 15 and Supaset 9. But hopefully it will be done by the end of next week. Thats the plan anyway.
The more observant of you will have noticed that there is an RSS feed for the blog! Its not perfect, but Bexxie is working on that and on getting an RSS for music uploads, so that you can be informed whenever there is new stuff to download. Brilliant eh?
Hmmmm….Not sure I have much else to say. Oh, I need to thank the latest donators to the site:-
Matthew Sheppard, Stephan Schon and Thomas Viereckl
Big ups to you’s and thank you very much – the support is appreciated!

Some good news in there!!! Looking forward to the next supa set, cant wait!!!
Shame about the camera, I had similar problems with a dvd cam. They are shite.
Best camcorders to get are firewire DV / mini dv. The quality is so much better and dv is very easy to edit. Esp. if you have final cut, cos you can output a file that is for imovie. Also final cut takes control of the camera and saves all the seperate recordings on the tape as different files. I have a sony one which works on the mac. But thats because it is firewire.
Also you should have just asked for a movie comverter, I use ffmpegx. Converts pretty much anything into anything. And its free!!!!
